I didn't win the Violet Crown Award in Austin, but I did get some lovely stickers that say 'Finalist,' and when I returned home my husband was waiting for me with an actual violet crown which I wear proudly around the house...
While I was in Texas, I found out that the University of Texas Press is publishing a book on contemporary Texas writers, organized by the Texas Council for the Humanities. It will feature photographs and interviews, and I'll be in it as a 'rising star.' It's set to come out in mid-2004. Ramona Cearley came all the way to Brooklyn from Austin to take my picture among the notebooks and dolls that surround my writing table--what fun! I'm really honored and excited to be included.
The book that did win the Violet Crown Award is Sleep Toward Heaven by Amanda Eyre Ward, and it's a really good book. 'A luminous story of murder and desire, solitude and grace, set in Manhattan and small-town Texas.'
I hope we all have time to enjoy books, friends, and family as we enter this busiest of seasons.
